Tell the kids. The reason for this holiday week is that two of our country's presidents (maybe more; I'm not sure) were born in February.
In the past, they each had their own day. Now, in the interests of conformity and commercialism, we have a week of "SALES" and very little remembering WHO we're doing this for.
I recently read a biography of George Washington. How very wise he was, to reject the offer to be "king". And how brave he was, to lead an "army" of fellows for a country that didn't even exist. We Americans are blessed to be the recipients of his courage and perseverance.
Not to mention the faith and prescience of Abraham Lincoln, the other president we are honoring this week and this day. He knew our country couldn't preach equality if we continued promoting slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation was a very gutsy move...and he paid with his life.
Politics was just as raucous back then as it is now. I pray that our presidents' vision for the United States continues to be true. "One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

bugs....
Many things carrry the appellation of "bug".
There used to be a car by that nickname.
Little kids are sometimes lovingly called bugs, I guess because they're small.
We get "bugs" in our computer.
The plans always need to have the bugs worked out.
The bug we're dealing with today is the dreaded "stomach bug".
It makes one feel crummy for 48 hours, I'm told.
There are lots of symptoms, each more disgusting than the last.
Basically, I've read that one suffering the stomach bug should get lots of liquid.
Dehydration is a very real possibility.
If one feels up to eating, he should focus on bland foods like banana, rice, applesauce, etc.
See? My applesauce supply is there for a reason!
So, I made banana muffins and brown rice.
Rescued some applesauce from the freezer.
Made coffee and got out the cranberry juice.
Took the temperature and gave out Tylenol, not aspirin.
The sufferer is laying low.
We don't want to share this, if we can help it.
Happy Sunday!

Give it away
"love isn't love 'til you give it away"
Of course, "love" has many definitions, just like "snow" in Alaska.
Today some of us "mature ladies" piled into a car and visited shut-ins.
We sang a "love" song and gave out valentine remembrances.
It wasn't planned.
It wasn't a committee.
We had bare roads and relatively good weather...and time.
So we went.
It was fun.

Pomegranate Anyone?
I remember when I was teaching I purchased a pomegranate, just to find out what I was talking about when we studied mythology. I admit I have not purchased one since.
Now I find out that, as well as being an oddity on my grocery list, pomegranates actually have lots of good nutrients. Vitamins B and C and fiber and anti-oxidants. Oh, and potassium.
The "8 Foods for Winter" article says that you can drink the juice or eat the seeds. In a salad. Hmm. That would expand my family's experience.
They don't grow pomegranates in my area. We are so blessed to have fruits from far away, trucked here by men (and women) who pilot those 18-wheelers across the country in all weather just to get our pomegranates to us.
I suppose I should (gulp) buy another pomegranate and see if I can encourage good health and new experience.

Alumni
Attended the first Alumni Basketball game this afternoon.
My daughter would have come, but she had work commitments.
It was interesting seeing people she had played with back in the '90's.
Some of them are still pretty good, and still in basketball shape.
Of course, some of them are now coaches themselves.
The next one is supposed to be during Christmas break.
Hopefully she'll be able to make that one.
They also had men's alumni game, so a few of the fellows my son played with in the late '80's and early '90's were there.
Interesting!
Not all of them have a middle-aged paunch!

"Automatic"
My hubby is checking out the automatic garage door opener.
It is not opening when the remote is pressed.
Of course, it is half right.
It is automatically staying closed.
He is so mechanical.
I'm sure it will be fixed by the time he comes back in.
Unless it "needs a part".
Then he will be taking a road trip to get the part and then come back and fix it.
God sure blessed me when He gave me him!

Bulletin
Needed: People who will march in a parade on February 12 under the banner "King Jesus, every knee will bow". It's part of the Saranac Lake Winter Festival, and there will be snow enough to go around. You can see this year's Ice Castle.
The parade is a mile and a half long. Make sure you wear warm duds.
You will be blessed!
